We hear it all the time: “I have nothing to wear to work!” Never again. There are a few basic rules to keep in mind to create a work wardrobe that becomes an investment.

Start with business basics: a solid, dark-coloured pantsuit or skirt suit that you feel comfortable in and doesn’t crease.  This should be a quality piece since it’s the base of your wardrobe.  If you buy properly, a suit should last you for years.

A well-cut dress is another great work option because you’re dressed in a flash. It will be a saviour when you’re running late. Choose a neutral colour in a fabric that is seasonless; we love lightweight wool. You’ll look elegant and sophisticated.

If you’re the type to walk for hours in stilettos, go for it! For the rest of us, a low-heeled shoe is a must. Invest in a pair of leather or suede in a colour that will work with both your suit and dress, and make sure they’re super comfortable.

Add some layering pieces and think versatility; lightweight sweaters, slim-fit tshirts, silk shirts. Choose a few in neutral colours, and some with small prints. These items should work equally well with your neutral suit and a pair of classic dark slim fit jeans.

Don't forget to choose a few pieces to show your personality. Whether it's a asymmetric skirt or a blazer in a fun print, think of these items as your personality pieces. You want to make an impression in the office without looking too out-there!
